Upstate New York's Salmon River is likely the most heavily fished steelhead system in the Great Lakes. In the fall, winter and early spring the river sees large returns of steelhead and provides great fishing opportunities for anglers running plugs and fishing spawn sacks. Chris Shaffer of Pautzke Bait Company flew into Syracuse and drove north to Pulaski to meet pro staffer Andy Bliss of Chasin Tail Adventures to make a short drift on the Salmon in search of steelhead in February. Armed with Natural and Orange BorX O Fire cured eggs in blue spawn sacks we managed to get them to bite even with temperatures in the low teens.
